Anyone following the US presidential race may have noticed independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. speaking with a gravelly voice. In a recent interview, Kennedy Jr. opened up about the neurological disorder that causes his raspy voice.
Kennedy Jr. was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia around 1996. The rare neurological disorder causes involuntary muscle spasms in the vocal cords, resulting in a raspy or strained voice.
Kennedy Jr. explained that he first noticed a change in his voice in his 40s. He initially attributed it to overuse, but eventually sought medical attention when the problem persisted.
Spasmodic dysphonia can be a challenging condition to live with, but Kennedy Jr. said he has learned to manage it. He uses a variety of techniques, including vocal exercises and breathing exercises, to help control his voice.
